The Amniotic Water Seeps, Identifies the Characteristics and Beware of the Dangers

Amniotic fluid seeps often experienced by pregnant women. However, in fact quite a lot do not realize that they are experiencing this condition. In fact, permeating amniotic fluid that is allowed to continue can cause serious health problems, ranging from infections, miscarriages, until the death of the fetus in the womb. Amniotic fluid is a protective fluid for the fetus in the uterus and amniotic sac during pregnancy. In addition to allowing babies to move freely in the womb before birth, amniotic fluid also serves to support the development of the fetal organs, as well as maintaining a stable temperature in the uterus so that the fetus feels comfortable.

Recognize the Characteristics of Amniotic Water Seeping or Leaking

During pregnancy, usually some pregnant women will release fluid from the vagina that is more diverse and more numerous. That is why some pregnant women find it difficult to distinguish between seeping amniotic fluid, urine, or other vaginal fluid. To distinguish it, pregnant women need to know the characteristics and differences between amniotic fluid and urine. Amniotic fluid has a clear color, sometimes the color also looks yellowish, often leaving white spots on the underwear, but does not smell. The amniotic fluid that seeps can also be accompanied by mucus or a little blood. Meanwhile, urine has a distinctive odor, while other vaginal fluids, such as vaginal discharge, are usually white or yellowish and thick. Not all seepage of amniotic fluid is a dangerous condition. When the gestational age enters 37 weeks, the amniotic fluid will indeed decrease because the body is preparing for the baby's birth process. At this time, it is only natural that the amniotic fluid seeps a little. However, pregnant women need to be vigilant if the amount of amniotic fluid coming out of the vagina is fairly numerous and occurs continuously. Plus if the discharge comes out green or yellow-brown, thick-textured, and accompanied by other symptoms, such as feeling often want to urinate, foul-smelling amniotic fluid, signs of fetal distress, or fever. Seeping amniotic fluid accompanied by these symptoms can indicate an infection of the membranes, disorders of the baby in the womb, or premature rupture of membranes. Pregnant women need to see a doctor immediately if experienced.

Danger of Amniotic Water Seeping

Amniotic fluid seeps in small amounts and not too often is considered normal. But in any case, Bumil must remain vigilant. The reason is, if the amniotic fluid that is seeping is left constantly, the amount of amniotic water that protects the fetus will be reduced. The following are risks that can occur if pregnant women lose a lot of amniotic fluid in the first and second trimesters:
  • Miscarriage
  • Babies have birth defects
  • Babies are born prematurely
  • Baby's death
Meanwhile, the loss of large amounts of amniotic fluid in the third trimester will cause difficulties during labor. In conditions of lack of amniotic fluid, the umbilical cord can be pinched and wrapped around the baby's neck, thereby reducing the flow of oxygen to the fetus. Amniotic fluid seeping in large amounts can also increase the risk of needing a caesarean section.

Risk factors for seeping amniotic fluid

If the amniotic fluid seeps before labor or occurs when the gestational age is already enough, this is normal. However, if the amniotic fluid leaks out prematurely (under 37 weeks of gestation) and is not accompanied by any signs of childbirth, then this should be watched out for. The following are some things that can increase the risk of pregnant women experiencing premature rupture of amniotic fluid or premature rupture of membranes:
  • Have had medical or surgical procedures on the cervix.
  • Containing twins.
  • Have had a premature birth before labor.
  • Suffering from infections, such as sexually transmitted infections and urinary tract infections.
  • Having a deformity of the uterus or short cervix.
  • Vaginal bleeding in the second and third trimesters.
In addition to some of the factors above, pregnant women are also at high risk of experiencing leaky or leaky amniotic fluid if they have an unhealthy lifestyle, such as consuming alcoholic beverages, smoking, rarely eating nutritious foods, and rarely exercising. If pregnant women experience seeping amniotic fluid, be sure to tell your obstetrician while undergoing a pregnancy check. If the amount of amniotic fluid that is seeping is large and has the potential to threaten pregnancy, the doctor may suggest that delivery be done immediately, to prevent complications.
